How Augmented Reality Military Is Utilized By The Army

By Jerry Burns

At present, many industries involved in technology have begun to develop the concept of augmented reality or AR. Unlike virtual reality that plays with the senses by putting users in an entirely new environment, augmented reality provides an interactive experience by projecting images or objects with the actual real life setting still in the background. It does not shift your perception of reality but builds around it instead. Augmented reality military, television, marketing, social media, video games, and medicine are some of the many applications of AR.

A familiar application of AR recognized by many people is the photo filter. When someone takes a photo using different social media applications, wearable animations like glasses and bunny ears pop up as if he or she actually wore them before taking the photo. Applications of AR are not only limited to photo filters. They also enhance marketing, promotion, medical procedures, and training exercises.

One of the most helpful functions of AR is providing real life simulations of war for soldiers and military personnel during their training exercises. Before soldiers can be deployed, they first have to go through rigorous training. This training involves lots of physical exercises, endurance tests, aiming at targets, and team competitions.

Obviously, these exercises do not come close to what they are about to experience in battle. A million stories can be told about bullets ricocheting everywhere or bombs exploding a few feet away, but these are only stories incapable of replicating the actual events. The closest they can come to an actual battle is through augmented reality.

For several years, the military has always attempted to develop workable augmented reality interfaces. AR used to provide map overlays of satellite displays to fighter pilots during its first applications for training purposes. Today, wearable equipment that can relay vital information involving movements of friendlies and enemy forces, as well as, location parameters are being developed.

Without obscuring the vision of ground troops, information can be relayed about incoming enemy troops while still maintaining awareness of the surroundings. AR can even be installed into military vehicles to give them a heads up of anything that poses harm several meters away. This way, the soldiers inside as well as the vehicle can brace for impact or turn a different direction to prevent casualties. They can also operate the machine from inside the vehicle without lifting the cover and exposing themselves to flying bullets or poisonous gas.

The HUD serves as the first ever augmented reality system available for testing in 2019 by the U. S. Army. The HUD features a system mounted onto a helmet that projects technical information onto the perspective of the soldier. Even under stressful situations, soldiers can determine their exact location and even the rest of the unit, as well as, enemy troops.

This can allow teams to carefully plan out strategies and carry them out swiftly during combat. Nighttime operations can also benefit from this technology. The arrangements of the data presented as well as the toughness of the display are some of the concerns still being addressed.

Scientific research and funding are currently being pumped out to improve further applications of AR in the military or elsewhere. While many people like to point out the cons of technology, they fail to realize how much it has enhanced all aspects of all industries. In fact, it is rather a great privilege to look forward to a future with advanced technology in it.
